Nicole Kidman To Stop Violence Against Women
Nicole Kidman is involved in a humanitarian campaign to stop violence against women.

“Obviously, I’m emotionally connected to this,” Kidman declares about this action during a press conference Tuesday at United Nations headquarters in New York. “I’m a mother. I have a child on the way. A lot of it is realizing the things that are wrong and how can I contribute to help my children have a better life?”

Kidman has been the goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Development Fund for Women since 2006. At the conference she had a passionate speech regarding this subject, violence against women, which she considers to be the “most widespread human rights violation of our time.”

Though U.N. statistics show that some progress is being made (89 countries have laws on domestic violence, more than 100 have made rape a crime, 90 have provisions against sexual harassment, and 93 on human trafficking), Kidman noted that “one in three women will encounter violence in some way, shape or form against them in their lifetime.”

She added, “That’s an extraordinary statistic. Yet do we ever hear it?”
